In the summer I investigated the role of women in the Peninsular War- two thousand camp followers embarked with a force of thirty six thousand troops in one of the most seminal campaigns in British military history. For hundreds of years the standard history of Britain was the one supplied by an obscure teacher, writer, cleric - and, later, priest - of dubious Welsh connections.
